The E-1 class locomotives were known for their graceful appearance and powerful performance. They were used primarily for passenger services, including the SP&S's premier trains, the North Coast Limited and the Empire Builder. No. 700, nicknamed "The First Lady of the Northwest," is the only surviving member of its class and is on display at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland, Oregon.
