HO Scale Diesel Locomotive,

This detailed HO Scale Atlas Master Silver EMD GP40 is based on the 3,000-horsepower road switchers introduced in 1966. The line of locomotives were powered by the 16-cylinder 645-series prime mover. A total of 1,145 units were produced between 1966 and 1972. These turbocharged 3,000hp locomotives were used primarily in road freight service. The GP40 was a versatile locomotive that could be found across the US hauling drag freights over mountain passes and leading high-speed intermodal trains across flat terrain. Three rooftop radiator fans at the rear of the long hood differentiate a GP40 from its lower horsepower counterpart, the GP38, which has two fans.
The EMD GP40 comes equipped with an eight-pin DCC socket for easy decoder installation when you're ready.
Other EMD GP40 features include a five-pole skewed-armature motor with dual flywheels, directional LED lighting,
AccuMate(R) magnetic knuckle couplers, accurate decoration, roadname-appropriate body phase details and plenty of applied details.

The GP40-2 was EMD's follow-up to the very successful GP40 locomotive model. While many internal upgrades were introduced (such as the use of improved, modular Dash 2 electrical components), there were some external differences between the early production GP40-2 and late-production GP40. This included an engine water-level sight glass on the right side of the body (a feature common to all EMD Dash 2 models), a larger electrical cabinet air filter box, a lengthened battery compartment on the left side, and a slightly modified cab.
All GP40-2s featured a 16-cylinder EMD 645-series diesel engine which was rated at 3,000 horsepower. Early to mid-production phase 2 GP40-2s were built from mid-1976 through late-1979. Several major spotting features of Phase 2 units include: an 88" low nose, corrugated radiator grilles and notched step wells.
Features:
Golden-white LEDs
Realistic die-cast underframe
Five-pole skewed armature motor with dual flywheels for optimum performance at all speeds
Directional lighting
Factory-equipped with AccuMate knuckle couplers
Detailed cab interior with crew
Separately-installed scale windshield wipers, metal grab irons and fine scale handrails
Movable drop steps
Walkway safety tread
Coupler cut bars
Multiple unit hoses and trainline hoses
Snowplow

Prototype Info:
General Electric’s “Dash 7” locomotive line was introduced as a replacement for the older “Universal-Series” of the 60s and early 70s. “Dash 7” series improvements included increased fuel efficiency, tractive effort and reliability. The B23-7 was a direct replacement for the 2,250HP U23B model. The first units were produced for Conrail in September, 1977 (ironically, 3 months after the last U23B was delivered to Conrail). Production continued through 1984, with a total of 535 units built. Conrail was the largest purchaser of the model, with a total fleet of 141 units.
Several features distinguished B23-7s from predecessor models. The long hood stepped outward in the area of the exhaust stack to accommodate a relocated oil cooler. In addition, the frame was 2 feet longer than that of the U23B. An FB-2 style truck was offered as standard equipment on B23-7s, but some railroads opted to use “trade-in” trucks. Therefore, AAR type B and Blomberg trucks could be found on some models. The six power assembly doors (located near the center of the long hood) indicated that the B23-7 was powered by a 12-cylinder GE FDL engine.
There were three distinct “phases” of GE 4-axle “Dash 7” locomotive production. Models on this run represent both “phase 1” and "phase 2" units. Phase 1 units feature a 36’2” wheel base and were built through the Spring of 1979. Phase 2 units feature a 37' 2" wheel base, and production lasted from the Spring of 1979 through the Fall of 1980.

Powered by a V12 FDL prime mover, the 2250 h.p. U23B was GE's intermediate-sized four-axle road-switcher of the late 1960s through the mid 1970s. The U23B's direct competitor during this period was the very successful EMD GP38. In 10 years of production from 1968 through 1977 a total of 481 units were produced, making this the second best seller of GE's "Universal Series" locomotives. The first units were delivered to the Delaware and Hudson in August and September 1968. CSX predecessors Chesapeake and Ohio and Louisville and Nashville had a combined fleet of 120 units, giving CSX one of the larger active fleets in later years. Penn Central, Santa Fe and Missouri Pacific also purchased sizeable fleets of U23Bs.
Primary spotting features include a stepped-out radiator section and two sets of three tall engine access doors near the center of the long hood. During production, the U23B was equipped with various truck side frames, including Blomberg trucks from EMD trade-in locomotives, AAR-style trucks, or GE's own four-axle "FB2" truck. One of these three truck styles is included on our model where appropriate per road name.
Today the number of active U23B's has dwindled, but a handful can still be found working for short lines and regional railroads in North America.
Features:
Snow plow (included when appropriate per road name)
Separately-applied scale detail parts include: windshield wipers, metal grab irons, coupler cut levers, multiple-unit hoses, train line hoses, fine scale handrails, drop steps and more!
Five pole skewed armature motor with dual flywheels for optimum performance at all speeds
Directional lighting with Golden-white LEDs
Blackened metal wheels
