The Trinity 3230 Pressure Differential (PD) covered hopper is a specialized freight car designed for transporting bulk materials. This model is essentially a more compact version of Trinity Rail's larger 5660 PD hopper. Developed from a base design introduced by Thrall Car in the late 1990s, the 3230 PD hopper addresses the need for a more versatile car that can handle heavier ladings.
The smaller size of the Trinity 3230 allows it to be efficiently loaded with dense materials such as cement and various grades of fly ash (Fly ash isa fine powder that is a byproduct of burning pulverized coal in electric power plants. During combustion, mineral impurities in the coal (such as clay, feldspar, quartz, and shale) fuse in suspension and rise with the exhaust gases. As these particles cool, they solidify into spherical glassy particles known as fly ash.) This capability makes it an ideal choice for industries that require the transport of heavy bulk goods. The car's design ensures that the materials remain protected from the elements while also allowing for easy unloading via pressure differential systems.
Most of these hoppers are operated by railcar leasing companies or shippers, who appreciate their efficiency and reliability. The Trinity 3230 PD covered hopper has become a staple in the freight rail industry, known for its robust construction and ability to handle demanding loads.
