    N Scale EMD GP38

The EMD GP38, built between 1966 and 1971, was a versatile four-axle diesel-electric locomotive designed for freight service. Powered by the EMD 16-645E prime mover, producing 2,000 horsepower, it was a reliable workhorse favored by railroads like Baltimore & Ohio, Penn Central, Southern Railway, and Chesapeake & Ohio. A total of 706 units were built, distinguishable by their dual exhaust stacks and lack of a turbocharger, setting them apart from the similar GP40.

Its successor, the GP38-2, introduced in 1972, featured electronic improvements and reliability upgrades, extending the design's longevity well into the 1980s. While many original GP38s have since been rebuilt or retired, several continue to operate on short lines and regional railroads, proving their enduring value in the industry.
