The GE Dash 8-40BW Locomotives
Design and Features
Built by General Electric in the early 1990s, the Dash 8-40BW was a unique variant of the Dash 8 series, combining high horsepower with the newly introduced North American wide-nose cab. Rated at 4,000 horsepower, these locomotives featured GE’s advanced microprocessor control systems and a four-axle (B-B) configuration, making them ideal for fast freight service. One of their most distinctive features was the dynamic brake blister and roof-mounted brake ventilation grilles, giving them a bold, modern silhouette.
🚧 Production Numbers
A total of 83 Dash 8-40BW units were built, all exclusively for the Santa Fe Railway. This made them the only 4-axle Dash 8 locomotives to be delivered with the wide-nose North American cab, setting them apart from their standard-cab Dash 8-40B siblings.
⚙️ Technological Advancements
The Dash 8-40BW incorporated GE’s microprocessor-based control systems, which offered:
• Enhanced traction control
• Improved fuel efficiency
• Diagnostic capabilities for easier maintenance
• Reliable performance across a range of operating conditions
Its B-B wheel arrangement provided a balance of speed and agility, making it well-suited for intermodal and priority freight assignments.
🧢 Evolution in Cab Design
The North American Cab, also known as the Safety Cab, was designed to improve crew protection and comfort. Features included:
• Reinforced crashworthy structure
• Improved visibility
• Ergonomic layout for long-haul operations
The Dash 8-40BW was a pioneer in combining this cab style with a 4-axle platform, a configuration typically reserved for six-axle units.
🚂 Railroads That Operated Dash 8-40BW Locomotives
• Santa Fe Railway (ATSF): The sole original operator of the Dash 8-40BW
• BNSF Railway: Inherited all 83 units following the 1995 merger of Burlington Northern and Santa Fe
While the standard Dash 8-40B units were used by Conrail, Norfolk Southern, CSX, and Union Pacific, the Dash 8-40BW remained a Santa Fe exclusive.
🏁 Legacy and Current Service
More than three decades later, many Dash 8-40BW units continue to serve under BNSF Railway, often in local and secondary service. Their longevity speaks to the durability of GE’s engineering and the effectiveness of their control systems. These locomotives represent a transitional moment in railroading—bridging the gap between traditional cab designs and the modern safety standards that define today’s fleet.
The Dash 8-40BW remains a favorite among railfans and modelers alike, not just for its performance, but for its unmistakable Santa Fe heritage and bold, wide-nose profile.

Analog (DC) Operation FEATURES:
- The LokSound Select Dual-Mode decoder allows your Atlas Gold Series locomotive to be used on DC as well as on DCC layouts.
- Please note that the Atlas Quantum Engineer will NOT operate an Atlas Gold Series locomotive equipped with a LokSound Select decoder on an analog (DC) layout. However, the sound and lighting
functions of the LokSound Select decoder in the Atlas Gold Series DASH 8 locomotive can be controlled by an easy-to-use basic DCC system
- Also note that on a DC-powered layout, a DCC and sound equipped locomotive (such as the Atlas Gold Series DASH 8) CANNOT be consisted with another locomotive that does not also have both DCC and sound. (This statement does NOT apply to DCC-equipped locomotives operating on a DCC layout.)
Sound Functionality FEATURES:
