85' Smooth-Side Dining Car

About the Prototype:

Step aboard the magnificent 85’ Smooth-Side Dining Car, where the golden age of rail travel comes alive in all its elegance and charm. This was no ordinary dining experience—it was a journey within a journey, blending refined cuisine, camaraderie, and breathtaking scenery. Polished fine china gleamed under the soft glow of overhead lights, while the rhythmic sound of the train’s journey created a soothing ambiance.

Dining on the Baltimore-to-New York train service was designed to impress and satisfy passengers, with meals reflecting regional specialties and seasonal ingredients:

  • Breakfast: Freshly brewed coffee, scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, toast with butter and preserves, and perhaps a side of fresh fruit or oatmeal.

  • Lunch: A light yet elegant meal, such as a chicken salad sandwich, a bowl of hearty soup, or a small steak served with seasonal vegetables.

  • Dinner: The highlight of the day, featuring dishes like roast beef with gravy, baked salmon, or chicken à la king, accompanied by mashed potatoes, green beans, and a dinner roll. Desserts might include apple pie, chocolate pudding, or a slice of layer cake.

Meals in the dining car, in general, were not included in the base fare and were considered an additional expense. Pricing varied depending on the route and time period, but a typical meal might cost between $1.50 and $3.00 during the mid-20th century—a modest price for an experience that combined fine dining with the romance of rail travel.

The dining car experience, elevated by the use of fine china, silverware, and crisp white linens, fostered camaraderie as passengers shared stories and laughter—all while America’s ever-changing landscapes passed by, framed by panoramic windows. The dining car wasn’t merely a place to eat; it was where the journey itself became an unforgettable experience.

The 85’ Smooth-Side Dining Car remains a testament to the luxury of streamlined rail travel, inspiring collectors and enthusiasts who cherish the elegance of a bygone era.
