Railroads: The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) was the primary user, purchasing 30 units. Other railroads that operated the EM-1 included the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway, Northern Pacific Railway, and Southern Pacific Railroad.
Usage
The EM-1 was designed for heavy-duty freight service, particularly for hauling coal and iron ore over steep grades. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad used them on the Cumberland Division, which had challenging terrain. Later, they were shifted to the Pittsburgh Division for hauling mineral traffic. The EM-1 was also a passenger and coal hauler as it navigated the Appalachian Mountains. With its powerful construction and speed, the EM-1 was a sight to see trundling across the tracks.
