The EMD SD40-2 is one of EMD's best-selling locomotives. Built between 1972 and 1989, nearly 4,000 units were produced. This model was popular among over 30 railroads, including Burlington Northern, Union Pacific, and Canadian National. Many of these locomotives are still in service today. The SD40-2 is powered by the EMD 16-645E3 turbocharged V16 prime mover, delivering 3,000 horsepower.
