EMD GP40 Locomotive

The EMD GP40 was considered the top of EMD's four-axle line when first introduced in the late 1960s. It visually differed from earlier GP models, featuring three radiator fans on its long hood, but was otherwise similar in style to the GP38, which entered production around the same time. Here are some key features:

The EMD GP40 locomotive was produced between November 1965 and December 1971. A total of 1,221 units were built. Of these, 1,187 were built for U.S. railroads, 16 for Canadian National, and 18 for Mexican railroads.

  • Power: Equipped with a 16-cylinder EMD 645E3 engine, producing 3,000 horsepower.

  • Design: Known for its robust construction and standardized features, making it easier to maintain and service.

  • Popularity: The GP40 was well-received by railroads due to its reliability and performance.

  • Production: Remained in production until it was succeeded by the GP40-2 in the early 1970s.

  • Current Usage: Many GP40 locomotives remain in service today, hauling local freights and performing yard duties.
