About the Prototype:
Weighing in at more than 400,000 pounds, with a length exceeding 80 feet and a massive 5,000 horsepower tractive effort, the SD80MAC is one of the heaviest, longest, and most powerful single diesel locomotives in the world. The name "SD80MAC" provides insight into its design and capabilities: "SD" stands for "Special Duty," indicating a six-axle locomotive with high tractive effort; "80" represents its model in the 8000-horsepower range; and "MAC" refers to its advanced AC traction motors. Within "MAC," the "M" specifically highlights the use of Motors, denoting the cutting-edge AC traction motor technology that was a significant advancement at the time, providing enhanced efficiency and reliability over traditional DC motors.
Produced by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division (EMD), the SD80MAC was first introduced in 1995. Conrail was the first and only railroad to purchase these locomotives, receiving all 30 units produced, including two demonstrator units. The SD80MAC was primarily used in coal service, where its immense power and efficiency made it ideal for hauling heavy loads.
After Conrail's split in 1999, the locomotives were divided between Norfolk Southern and CSX. Over time, these units have seen changes in ownership and usage. Some were sold to Canadian Pacific and Progress Rail, while others were scrapped. As of recent years, only six SD80MAC units remain, serving as parts sources for Canadian Pacific's SD70ACU rebuild program.
