About the Prototype:

The EMD GP9 Phase 2 locomotives were a significant evolution in diesel-electric rail technology, built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) between 1954 and 1963. These locomotives were an improved version of the earlier GP7, featuring a 16-cylinder EMD 567C engine that produced 1,750 horsepower.
One of the key distinctions of the Phase 2 GP9 was its refined design, which included changes to the bodywork and improved cooling systems. While externally similar to the GP7, the GP9 Phase 2 introduced low short hoods on some units, particularly for railroads like Southern Pacific, which prioritized better crew visibility.
The GP9 Phase 2 was widely adopted by major North American railroads, including Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Great Northern. These locomotives were used in freight and passenger service, with some units equipped with steam generators for heating passenger cars. Their versatility made them a staple in railroad operations, and many were later rebuilt for extended service life.
Even decades after their production ended, GP9 Phase 2 locomotives remain in operation, particularly on short lines and tourist railroads. Their reliability and adaptability have cemented their legacy as one of EMD’s most successful locomotive models.
