The Pennsylvania Railroad began production of the X31 series 40’ boxcar in 1934. These cars featured an unusual round roof appearance to provide maximum capacity and was produced in both single and double door variants. In total, the PRR produced 6700 X31A boxcars, which traveled throughout North America into the mid 1960’s to when at the time of the Penn Central merger, about 1000 were left in service.
