About the Prototype
The Legacy of the NSC Newsprint Box Car
-
Manufacturer and Design: The NSC Newsprint Box Cars were designed and built by the National Steel Car Corporation of Hamilton, Ontario, starting in 1966. They were specifically engineered to transport large rolls of newsprint paper. These cars featured smooth interior surfaces to prevent damage to the rolls and an internal height of over 9 feet for stacking.
-
Cargo and Features: Designed for carrying newsprint paper, these boxcars had large sliding doors, such as Youngstown lever-type flush plug doors or lever-less exterior post plug doors, making it easier to load and unload rolls weighing up to 2,000 pounds each.
-
Railroads and Usage: Railroads such as Canadian National (CN), Canadian Pacific (CP), Central Vermont (CV), Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific (DWP), Pacific Great Eastern (PGE), Minnesota, Dakota and Western (MDW), and Quebec North Shore and Labrador (QNS&L) used these boxcars, often for paper shipping services between Canada and the United States.
-
Paint Schemes:
-
CN cars often featured yellow doors and the "noodle" logo.
-
CP boxcars bore the "pine tree" logo.
-
CV cars sometimes featured yellow doors with a small CV logo.
-
Other railroads, like DWP and MDW, applied their unique branding, adding variety to the fleet.
-
-
Phasing Out: With the decline of the newspaper industry and the shift to digital media, these boxcars saw reduced demand. They remained in service through the late 2000s but eventually faded from the rails.
-
Legacy: Today, NSC Newsprint Box Cars are celebrated by railfans, historians, and model railroad enthusiasts for their innovative design, colorful paint schemes, and vital role in supporting the newspaper industry during its heyday.
