The B-100-40 Box Car was built by Pacific Car & Foundry in 1976, with 250 units delivered exclusively to the Southern Pacific Railroad. These boxcars featured a 5,195-cubic-foot capacity, Hydra-Cushion underframe for shock absorption, 12-foot-wide plug doors, and distinctive half-height waffle sides, making them easily recognizable. Their design allowed them to efficiently transport paper products, canned goods, and other consumer items across North America, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In the mid-1990s, several B-100-40 boxcars were rebuilt by Greenbrier as part of Southern Pacific’s Golden West Service, receiving a fresh blue paint scheme and updated mechanical features. Some were later repurposed for Amtrak’s express freight service, carrying bulk mail and parcel shipments. To accommodate these new roles, modifications included large wheel door handles, reinforced struts for stability at higher speeds, and brackets for end-of-train devices.
Despite their age, many B-100-40 boxcars remain in service today, now operating under Union Pacific, Southern Pacific’s successor. They continued to be spotted on major freight corridors, including Southern Pacific’s Sunset Route, moving cargo efficiently across long distances
